Extruded coconut-shell carbon block, 20 by 4.5 inch, rated 5 micron, for the second housing of the AquaGuard or any Big Blue unit. Chlorine, chemical taste and smell come out at whole-house flow, and the block's own 5 micron rating catches what the sediment stage missed.
What it does
Municipal water in Gauteng arrives with up to 1 mg/L of free chlorine, which is why showers smell of the swimming pool and why skin and hair dry out. A carbon block at the point of entry takes it out for every tap, geyser and shower head, along with the organic compounds that give water a taste.
When to change it
Every six months. Carbon saturates silently; the chlorine smell returning in the shower is the late sign. On heavily chlorinated or smelly supplies, consider the 20 inch GAC in this housing instead, for more contact time.
