UV Sterilisers
Ultraviolet light at 254 nanometres stops bacteria, viruses and cysts reproducing without adding anything to the water. The 55 watt stainless steel unit handles a whole house at 2 720 litres an hour. The lamp is the only part that wears, and it is here with the sleeve and the ballast.

What UV costs, and what it costs to keep running.
The AquaClear UV 55 watt steriliser is R2 095: a whole house at 2 720 litres an hour, no chemicals, nothing added to the water. With the AquaGuard ahead of it, the combo is R4 795.
The lamp is the only part that wears: R585 once a year, whether or not it still glows, because the output falls long before the light goes. The quartz sleeve is cleaned every six months and replaced when it scales or cracks, R585; the lamp-and-sleeve kit is R1 095. Running it draws 55 watts around the clock, about 1.3 kilowatt hours a day.
Fitted beside a whole-house filter by Andy Plumbers in Johannesburg, the UV is quoted with the filter (the three-stage unit runs R5 000 to R7 500 fitted, the UV added to that). Economy courier is free from R1 500.
