55 Watt UV Quartz Sleeve
Cracked sleeve, wet lamp, dead ballast. Keep a spare.
The fused quartz tube that keeps the lamp dry inside the chamber and lets the UV through, 24.5 mm by 940 mm with one open end, supplied with two O-rings. It rarely wears out but it does break, usually during a lamp change, and the unit cannot run without it. Clean it every six months; replace it when it is cracked, etched or clouded.
Why it matters
Ordinary glass blocks UV-C. Fused quartz passes over 90% of it, which is why the sleeve is quartz and why a clouded or scaled sleeve quietly halves the dose. A cracked one lets water reach the lamp and the ballast, and that is a lamp, a ballast and a sleeve to replace instead of one.
Cleaning and changing
Every six months: power off, gland nut off, lamp out, then draw the sleeve out carefully and wipe it with a soft cloth and white vinegar or alcohol. Hard water leaves a scale film that vinegar lifts. Fit the new O-rings whenever the sleeve comes out; they are what seals the chamber.
