Three of the 1 micron melt-blown cartridges for the last housing of the AquaGuard or any 20 inch Big Blue unit, and the stage a UV steriliser depends on. Three changes on the shelf keep the water clear enough for the lamp for a year and a half, with no gap between the cartridge blocking and the courier arriving.
Why three of the same
Behind a UV steriliser the 1 micron stage is not a polish, it is part of the sterilising. Cloudy water shades bacteria from the light, so a blocked or missing 1 micron cartridge means water that looks treated and is not. A household on borehole or tank water changes this stage more often than the rest, and a spare in the cupboard means it never runs without one.
Before a UV steriliser
UV light only works on water it can pass through. Turbidity above about 1 NTU lets microorganisms hide behind particles. A 5 micron then 1 micron sequence ahead of the UV is the minimum, on a borehole or a tank especially.
