Melt-blown polypropylene, 20 by 4.5 inch, rated 1 micron, for the last housing of the AquaGuard or any Big Blue unit. It catches the fine particles the first two stages let through, and it is the stage that makes water clear enough for a UV steriliser to work: cloudy water shades bacteria from the light.
What it does
One micron is a hundredth of a human hair. At that rating the cartridge takes out the fine silt and carbon fines that make water faintly cloudy, most cysts, and the particles that would otherwise settle in the geyser. It sits last so that the coarser stages do the heavy lifting and this one lasts.
Before a UV steriliser
UV light only works on water it can pass through. Turbidity above about 1 NTU lets microorganisms hide behind particles. A 5 micron then 1 micron sequence ahead of the UV is the minimum, on a borehole or a tank especially.
