Coconut-shell granular activated carbon, 12 by 40 mesh, 25 kg, for FRP carbon vessels ahead of a softener or a UV, and for the refillable Big Blue shell. Adsorbs chlorine, chloramine traces, pesticides, solvents and the organic compounds behind taste and smell. Needs three minutes of contact and replacing when it breaks through, not on a calendar.

Carbon works by contact, not by flow. Three minutes is the minimum, which means a 75 litre bed in our vessel treats about 1.5 cubic metres an hour properly and only pretends to at 4. Run carbon vessels slower than filter vessels, or run two.

Carbon is light: 25 kg is about 50 litres. Rinse it in the vessel before service until the backwash runs clear.
Life
One to three years on municipal water, depending on the chlorine load. It does not block; it saturates. Test the outlet for chlorine once a month with a pool test strip, and change the bed the month it shows. A smell returning at the taps is the late sign.
