Stage two. Chlorine, taste and smell.
Granular coconut-shell activated carbon in a 10 by 2.5 inch cartridge. Loose granules give the water contact time that a solid block cannot, so this is the stage that takes the swimming-pool smell out of Johannesburg tap water. Fits the AquaShield and every standard 10 inch housing.
What it does
Activated carbon adsorbs: chlorine, chloramine traces, the chemical by-products of treatment and the organic compounds that give water a taste and a smell stick to its surface. One gram has the surface area of a rugby field. Granular carbon works by contact time; the carbon block that follows works by fineness. The two together do what neither does alone.
When to change it
Every 6 months. Carbon does not block; it saturates, silently, and one day the chlorine walks straight through to the membrane, which chlorine destroys. Change it on the calendar, not on the taste.
Fitting
Housing two. The end with the gasket faces up, into the cap. Flush for five minutes on the first fill: the grey water is harmless carbon fines washing out.
