Inline Post-Carbon Filter

Stage five. The taste pass between the tank and the tap.

A sealed inline cartridge of granular activated carbon with 1/4 inch threaded ends and the elbows to fit it. Water that has stood in the tank picks up a faint flatness; this stage takes it out on the way to the tap. Fits the AquaShield and any RO line, and doubles as a fridge or ice-maker filter.

In detail

What it does

The membrane makes the water pure; the tank holds it for hours against a rubber bladder. The post-carbon stage sits after the tank and polishes each glass as it is drawn, so the water at the tap tastes the way it did leaving the membrane. It is the stage people skip and then wonder why the water tastes "of the tank".

When to change it

Every 12 months, or 5 600 litres. It carries very little load, so it lasts, but it is the last thing the water touches, and a stale carbon stage is where taste goes wrong.

Fitting

Push the tubes out of the old elbows, screw the new elbows into the new cartridge with the flow arrow pointing to the tap, push the tubes back in. Flush a litre. Ten minutes, no tools.
