Stage six. Calcium and magnesium back in.
Reverse osmosis takes everything out, the good minerals included, and the water tastes flat and reads slightly acidic. This cartridge is four media in one 10 inch body: maifan stone, mineral stone, bio-ceramic granules and far-infrared ceramic balls. Calcium and magnesium go back in, the pH comes up, and the water tastes like water again. It is stage six on the AquaShield. On a five-stage system, or a fridge line, the clamps, elbows and tube in the box add it as a sixth stage in ten minutes.

Maifan stone
The first bed the water meets. A mineral rock that the maker's sheet lists as carrying calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, copper and selenium, which it gives up slowly as the water passes. Water straight off a membrane carries almost nothing, so it takes minerals readily, and this is where it takes the first of them. The sheet also rates the stone to catch traces of heavy metals, which after a membrane is belt and braces.
Mineral stone
The second bed, and the one you taste. It adds calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, and it raises the pH: water off a membrane reads slightly acidic, and this is the bed that brings it back up. By how much depends on the water, so we print no number. If you want one, a pH meter on the tap is the only honest way to get it.
Bio-ceramic granules
The third bed. The maker rates it for a further reduction of chloroform, one of the by-products chlorine leaves behind, and of some heavy metals: a last pass at what the carbon stages and the membrane may have let through. After those five stages there is very little left for it to catch, which is what a last line should find.
Far-infrared ceramic balls
The fourth bed. The maker's sheet says the balls emit far infrared and balance the pH after the mineral stone has raised it. The first two beds are the ones you taste; this one holds the result steady. We print what the sheet says about it and nothing more.
Where it fits
After the post-carbon stage, last in line before the tap, so nothing downstream strips what it adds. On the AquaShield it is already there. The maker rates it for every domestic RO system; on a five-stage system, or on a fridge line, the kit's two compression elbows, two double clamps and metre of 1/4 inch tube put it inline in ten minutes.
When to change it
Every 12 months or 5 676 litres, whichever comes first; the maker's rating is 1 500 US gallons. The media dissolves slowly by design; when it is spent, the water is still pure, it just tastes flat again. That is the sign.
