Will it make the water hard?

A little: it adds 20 to 50 mg/L of hardness, which is why a softener, if you need one, goes after it.

A SANS 241 report states it, or a pool test kit gives a rough reading. Under 6.8 and copper fittings are being eaten.

Why is the courier not free on media?

A 25 kg bag costs more to move than most of the cartridges in the shop cost to buy, so media ships at the quoted rate whatever the order value. The checkout shows the real courier rate for the bags together before you pay.

How long does delivery take?

Paid orders leave us within 24 hours with JKJ Express or The Courier Guy, whichever suits the order. Johannesburg addresses usually see the parcel the next working day, other major centres in 2 to 3 working days, regional areas in 4 to 5. The waybill number arrives by email the moment it is collected, and overnight express is an option at checkout for smaller parcels.

For water that eats copper. Raises the pH by dissolving, slowly.

Crushed calcium carbonate, 25 kg. Acidic water, pH under 6.8, is common from boreholes and rain tanks, and it dissolves copper pipes and geyser elements and leaves blue-green stains. Calcite dissolves into it instead, lifting the pH toward neutral and adding a little hardness. The bed shrinks as it works; top it up every six to twelve months.

Where it fits

Its own vessel, after the sediment stage and before a softener or a UV, with an F56A1 or F67C1 valve on top. Water passes up through the bed, the calcite neutralises the acid, and the pH at the outlet settles between 7 and 7.5. It suits water from pH 6.0 up; below that, ask us about blending a stronger media.

The bed needs at least 60 cm of depth for contact time, so do not under-fill to save a bag.

Backwash and top-up

Backwash every one to two weeks at 20 metres an hour to lift the fines. Check the level every six months through the valve opening; when it has dropped 15 cm, add a bag.
