How much you use
The valve meters the salt into each regeneration, and how often it regenerates is a setting, so use varies with the water and the settings. On a household softener we top up with about 25 kg, two or three bags, every three to five months. Keep the tank at least a third full and never let it run dry, or the next regeneration does nothing and the geyser starts scaling again.
Not for
Pool chlorinators, which want a different grade. And do not put table salt, rock salt or pool salt in a softener: the anti-caking agents and the impurities foul the resin and the injector.
