The beads that trade calcium for sodium. 25 litres, food grade.
Strong acid cation exchange resin in sodium form, 25 litres (about 20 kg), the bed a water softener is built on. Hard water passes through, calcium and magnesium stick to the beads, sodium takes their place, and the geyser, kettle and shower screen stop scaling. The F63C1 valve regenerates it with brine from the tank on the days you set.

What a bed does between regenerations
A 75 litre bed softens roughly 20 000 litres of moderately hard water (200 mg/L as calcium carbonate) before it needs regenerating. A household using 800 litres a day gets about three weeks; set the F63C1 to regenerate weekly and it never runs out.
Life
Eight to twelve years on municipal water. Two things shorten it: chlorine, which cracks the beads, so a carbon stage goes ahead of a softener on chlorinated supplies; and iron, which coats them, so iron removal goes ahead of it on a borehole.
